SAN ANTONIO, TX , August 31, 2021 – Officials of Special Olympics Texas (SOTX) announced today that the 2021 Summer Games scheduled at Morgan’s Wonderland for Sept. 18-21 have been postponed because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
“After much deliberation and discussion, we have decided to postpone the 2021 Summer Games until May 12-15, 2022, to ensure the safety and health of all attendees,” said SOTX CEO Tim Martin. “Unfortunately, this is the second time we’ve had to postpone the Summer Games because of COVID-19.
“We had originally scheduled the Games for this past May but were forced to shift to September. We now have high hopes that the pandemic will diminish and that the Games can proceed next May, much to the delight of thousands of our athletes all across the state.”
Martin also noted that SOTX is currently planning in-person Area and Regional Games later this year when it’s deemed safe to play. Updates on all SOTX events and activities will be available at www.SOTX.org/SummerGames.
“Naturally, we’re disappointed that the lingering coronavirus outbreak has altered plans for the 2021 Summer Games,” said Ron Morander, CEO of Morgan’s Inclusion Initiative, which coordinates planning, fundraising and communications between the unique theme park and other ventures designed with the special-needs community in mind. “But we all agree safety is of paramount importance. We look forward to a return of the joy and excitement that the Summer Games generated when they were held at Morgan’s Wonderland for the first time two years ago.”
