SAN ANTONIO, TX, April 8, 2021 – An estimated 200 athletes with physical disabilities and visual impairments from across the state will compete in the 11th Annual Texas Regional Games (TRG) from Friday through Sunday, April 16-18, at newly-opened Morgan’s Wonderland Sports (MWS) complex and nearby venues in proximity to world-renowned Morgan’s Wonderland theme park.
Sponsored by Texas Regional Para Sports, TRG will offer competition in eight sports – archery, precision shooting, track and field, boccia, cycling, tennis, power lifting and swimming, said Wendy Gumbert, director. MWS will be the hub of the Games, while some contests will take place at North East Independent School District’s Heroes Stadium and the STAR Soccer Complex.
“TRG will be the first adaptive sporting competition in over a year for six of the eight sports,” Gumbert added. “Athletes have been training for over a year with no competition outlet. Our ability to host TRG in 2021 offers so much hope and positive energy to the future. Many TRG athletes are training to qualify for their respective US Paralympic Trials in hopes of making the 2021 US Paralympic Team that’s headed to Tokyo. TRG will host many current Paralympians as well as 2021 Paralympic hopefuls.”
In addition, many TRG athletes are preparing to qualify for the University Interscholastic League (UIL) State Track and Field Championships. Student athletes with physical disabilities compete under the UIL school-based program in the 100-yard dash, 400-yard dash and shot put. For Army and Marine Corps athletes, TRG will serve as qualification trials for the 2021 Warrior Games.
Gumbert thanked Morgan’s Wonderland, MWS and Maxwell Medical Services “for continuing to provide opportunities for athletes with disabilities to succeed in life and on the playing field.” For more TRG information, visit https://TexasRegionalSport.org/Texas-Regional-Games/, or contact Gumbert at wgumbert@hotmail.com.
